Film Review - The Human Centipede II

The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)

Director: Tom Six Writer: Tom Six Actors: Laurence R. Harvey, Ashlynn Yennie, Maddi Black 100% medically INaccurate.

This horror sequel attempts to regain some of the wicked awesomeness of the original film, Human Centipede (First Sequence), However, in what it fails to deliver in horror, it delivers with dark comedy. Human Centipede II is a black and white tale of a socially awkward, mentally challenged, sickly, short, pot-bellied bloke named Martin who still lives with his demented, aging mother. Martin finds refuge from his boring life by creating a special scrapbook paying homage to the first film. The film tries to shock audiences by displaying Martin’s desire to mimic the medical “art” from the first film. Unfortunately, it fails miserably. All that is left is violence, brutality and gore that only kept me chuckling from time to time. Even the artsy, “Eraserhead”-like quality of close-ups of the protagonist’s frog-like, bulging eyes alongside eerie background sounds can’t save this film from itself.

Nokia’s choice of product placement, whether recognized by the mobile phone manufacturer or not, even makes the film more humorous. Here is a loner knocking customers in the head with a crowbar in hopes of “connecting people” together mouth to anus in a 12-person long centipede-like amalgam. In 2011, Nokia terminated 10,500 jobs world-wide as it tried to transform itself into a faster, leaner firm, thus creating something new with all its parts.

For pure shock value, the film succeeds at some level. For dark, twisted comedy, whether intended or not, the film certainly passes the grade. If you want to see what pure evil looks like then read about the Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs who murdered 21 people in Ukraine by bludgeoning them with a hammer. They even took the time to shoot videos of a few of their murders. Unfortunately, there were no make-up artists and special effects gurus for those evil films. Find them on the Net if you dare.

“On June 6th 2011 the BBFC (UK certification board)” refused to grant this film a rating thus barring it from British theaters and DVDs. However, in my opinion, this act only made people want to see this film. If you dig horror, then The Human Centipede series is perfect for you. I just hope that we have seen the end of the centipede and this doesn’t turn into a long, drawn-out line of sequels like Saw.

Grade: 3 out of 97
