Film Review - God Bless America

Written by Nando Miranda and published on May 19, 2012.

God Bless America (2011) Written & Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait Actors: Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr “Taking out the trash, one jerk at a time.”

The actor who played Freddie Rumsen in Mad Men seasons 1, 2 and 4 plays Frank. Frank just lost his job, has very loud and inconsiderate neighbors, has been declared terminally ill with a brain tumor and thus he opts to take his own life. Before he does this, he is determined to eliminate one of the brattiest teenagers in all of America. When the time comes to do himself in, he is interrupted by 16-year old Roxy.

Reminiscent of Leon:The Professional (1994) with Jean Reno and Natalie Portman combined with Michael Douglas in Falling Down (1993), God Bless America, takes viewers through Bobcat Goldthwait’s cleverly written rants and dialog depicting the main characters’ view on the decline of the United States of Idiocracy. With a touch of Dexter and Lolita, the film contrasts key moments with slow-motion scenes and a superb soundtrack. There are also hints of Network (1976), Robocop (1987) and Super (2010).

Goldthwait has directed a few films and written for screen and television in recent years. This dark comedy of his delivers a smart and intelligent script that is accurate for today’s modern malaise and dumbing down of America. Perhaps one day as well, each audience member should consider eliminating idiotic jerks one at a time until his/her neighborhood can once again breathe fresh air away from the choking insanity of everyday life.

God Bless America is a walking dead, shoot’em up, horror/comedy without the treacherous infection or virus. Goldthwait just wants us to find our compassion once again.
